Online Marketing Strategy: How to Brand Yourself Without it Being about You

December 3, 2010

What an interesting paradoxical question, don’t you think?  Lately I’ve seen a few guru’s who in their latest products or courses who are touting their successes to an ultra-high degree, at least in my book.

While they do have tremendous successes that are clearly evident…if they are clearly evident do we need to hear them talking about themselves about how awesome they are?  No we don’t, because we already know it.  Otherwise why would we be interested in their products, blog posts, ideas etc?  :).   So my opinion is that there is no need to tell people how incredibly successful we are.  Our success will be evident to those around us!

So that beggs the question…

How Can You Brand Yourself, Without Making it About You?

Watch below, and enjoy!

Great topic, Roz! You walk your talk, my friend. You are a good example of a “down-to-earth” person who is more focused on others and what you can share with them than on promoting yourself. That is one reason people are attracted to you.

Decades of experience with recruiting network marketers has made one thing clear. The MAIN question in the mind of the prospect is almost always: “Can I do it?”, i.e., “Will it work for me, even though I am not as talented as you?” Often the reason they say no is that they are afraid that they may not be as “awesome” as the recruiter who is bragging about his or her success.

One of the most successful recruiters in all of MLM history was famous for saying, “You can do it!” And he gave the impression that if HE could do it, then they surely could ;-)

P.S., As important as personal recruiting is, “duplicability” by masses of ordinary people is even more crucial to long-term residual income. If it is all about you, you only have a JOB.

Robert Kyosaki says that a network marketing business should become “an ASSET, not an income.” Real freedom comes from leveraging the entrepreneurial spirit of thousands of ordinary people. If you make it all about THEM, your passive residual income stream should grow exponentially!

I love that…”If it is all about you, you only have a JOB”. This business truly is about others, and us helping them to reach their potential, as we are being helped to reach our potential by our enrollers.

Freedom certainly cannot be found by more money but rather enjoying the ride and helping as many as possible enjoy it with you :)

Great points Buddy!! I love that quote also … “If it is all about you, you only have a JOB.” One of the first things we learn in this industry is that it is all about how our products can benefit the prospect and solve a problem for them. It is not about us and you have explained that so eloquently in your comments. Thanks!

    I respectfully disagree.

I am my own most valuable benefit and the most unique quality I possess, so of COURSE I’m going to brand myself and make my branding about me and why my particular brand of marketing helps *you*.

There’s nothing wrong with having the self-confidence enough to say, hey! I walk the talk I talk, I know what I’m talking about and here’s why you want to listen to me.

Thanks for sharing your opinion Barbara. You certainly are right when you say you are your most valuable asset.

My point is that there is a fine line between being confident and letting your skill set shine through so it’s clearly evident for others to see that you know what you are doing and worth listening to….and contrasting that with touting yourself as the next best thing since sliced bread :D

Thanks for adding your value to the community Barbara!

  4. Buddy Hodges Says:

Wow, Barbara! You are a quintessential Professional, and I respect you for accomplishments. I am duly impressed with your resume and your website. You obviously work harder than I do. On your website you say, “Interested in making money from the sweat of my brow? Become an affiliate today.”

I think our difference is not so much a matter of opinion as it is a matter of choice. To quote an old hippie saying, “Different strokes for different folks.” I used to be a Professional, both as a college professor and as a management consultant on a fairly long-term contract with the U.S. Office of Economic Development. Although I earned a high income, it depended on my own continued effort. I enjoyed making a difference, but I also enjoyed the leverage when I hired other consultants as sub-contractors.

For myself, network marketing is more about FREEDOM than about money or fame. Frankly, I have sometimes earned much more per month (part-time) in residual income than I earned per year teaching in college full-time. As for personal fulfillment and satisfaction, I thoroughly enjoy making friends for a living and boosting others to achieve their goals.

I was impressed too when I visited her unique website :) It is a choice Buddy, and I find that it’s one that tends to go with our personality.

There are those out there who are much more bombastic than we are and they might rub us the wrong way…but likewise they probably see us as too meek or what have you. Both can be successful certainly, so it’s up to us to choose which path we want to take, and who we want to attract to our business.

Hey Roz! Definitely a beautiful and important message. As we see more and more people “branding” themselves now a days, this is very imperative to understand. I really like Donnie’s comment above, one act of kindness can brand you more than announcing yourself to the world! So very true and you will come to realize it comes back to you ten times fold!

Also, LOVING the creativity in your videos… you are ROCKING it!

This is a provocative post Roz which stimulates discussion, good job! I am personally sick and tired of those sales videos which are nothing but 10 min of telling me how much money you have made. They may be good at catching a few newbies but can they really build relationships and generate long term income? Are people really that gullible and naive?

My feeling is that demonstrating what you can do is much more attractive and powerful than bragging about it. A little bragging is OK, but just a little. People are more impressed by the actual performance than they are by the behind the scenes look.

Branding yourself is saying you have to talk about yourself. BUT if you just be yourself then you build a relationship with people first, then a more natural progression is to learn about each other. I find that reading others blogs and information, it gives me a good ideas if they are genuine or just trying to be someone they are not. Excellent post Roz and one for good conversation over and over again!

    Roz Pearcy Reply:

I love the “natural progression is to learn about each other”. That’s a key point is that it’s NOT natural to talk about yourself and how wonderful you are and how you have all these great results.

The results will be evident, and it will also be evident that you know what you are talking about. So when we get that relationship going it will be only natural to learn about each other.

Then the other person is asking about us, rather than us just taking the initiative to talk about ourselves lol :).

Thanks for stopping by Lynn and giving your valuable comment!!

    Roz,
I absolutely LOVE THIS! This is so true and this type of branding is one reason I chose to work with Watkins. My sponsor, the one who told me about this business, we connected. It wasn’t all about her, yet she told me enough about her that we could make that connection! If you are branding yourself in an egotistical way, you are breaking the connections you could be making with others. You are like a head with no neck connecting you to your body. What good is a head if it’s not connected to the body? Your prospects are your body. The brain sends messages to the body to help it function but if it’s not connected those messages are not getting through!

Thank you for sharing this with us!
