A Day in the Life of a Spammer (I Know Because I Used to be One)

August 31, 2010

Hello my friends!  Wow, well I have a story to share with you today.  You see, it all started 3 years ago after I had my first child that I looked into working at home.  I quickly realized that Network Marketing was the way to go.  Well my first business had pretty poor training, so that coupled with a lack of passion I quickly found a company that I was passionate about.  The team really was great and had great training.  While they didn’t advocate outright spamming, they taught ways to have your information out there for people to check out if they want to.    They also taught about how to post free classified ads, with of course not leading people on that what we had was a job but rather a business opportunity.

However, even though this was not outright spamming…it lent itself to easily morph into spamming!  So in my video below I share my experiances of my life as a spammer before I learned that there is a better, far more productive, and WAY more fun way of getting out there in this world of Network Marketing.  I hope you enjoy :)

Well, what do you think?  Did you have a previous life as a spammer?  If so to what degree?  I would love for this post to inspire people to check out this world of personal branding so if you have any testimonies of how much better your business is and how much more fun you are having please do share!  Think any of your FB or Twitter friends can benefit from this?  Please share with them as well…if we can all shout from the rooftops that there is a better way to market your business I think we can change the perception that many  have of Network Marketing being in a negative light.  Thanks in advance of your comment!

Hey Roz! Awesome video and had to have nice little laugh on this one! I remember the beginning days of my Network and Online Marketing venture and search… man, I was a “Spammer” as you call it… but I quickly learned how beneficial it was to actually build relationships and help those through true value, content and support.

You had some awesome points and anyone who is wanting to be successful in Online Marketing or Network Marketing must realize that plastering your opportunity is not the way! You must build relationships and truly care about OTHERS and what they are searching for!

Thanks girl for the great video! :)

Roz, I too was sort of a spammer in the beginning. I’m just glad that I learned before I went too far with it. I did spam on FB, I did spam on Twitter.
Lucky for me I became a student of attraction marketing, and went through many courses to learn the ropes, and I’m so glad I did! Things have changed so much for the better since I stopped spamming.
You do a great job with video! Keep up the good work!

Good to hear things are for the better with your “No Spam” ways! It just feels so much better for me not to spam, although my previous spam habits I have to fight against because I did it for just over years so I’m sure it will be a while before that thought doesn’t come up.

Thanks for the comments on the video…I still have a long way to go for my true personality to come out, but I’ve found each video is better than the previous one. Thanks for stopping by today!

    Hey Roz,

Great video! However, it’s not so easy to learn to brand yourself by blogging, etc. I have yet to find someone who is willing to teach it in a duplicatible way. I have’nt found anyone willing to give you the steps yet they tell you it’s so easy. Guess what? It’s really not that easy! But I agree with you that posting classifieds and spamming is not very professional and certainly not fun. Again, great video!

    Roz Pearcy Reply:

No it’s not easy, but neither is spamming lol! Any work with a business will be hard work…so I think doing it through personal branding is the FUN way :).

I’m not sure why you haven’t found someone who will teach it in a duplicatable way though…those that I’ve learned from seem to teach it well. Check out these blogs for help: http://www.JennKMay.com, http://www.Amanda-Marie.com, and http://www.KatieFreiling.com. HTH!

    Hey Roz!

You have so much courage to share your post and I LOVE that you’ve taken the road of social media and attraction marketing.
I think alot of people start out in ways very similar to yourself, I did as well. :) Very few people have the courage to admit it though. You are a true leader!!

    Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks Amanda! It really seems to be a no brainer when you learn about attraction marketing that it’s the way to go. I actually had someone come to me with this way of marketing about years ago but I didn’t pay any attention to it, not realizing what I had! But all is good because it has led me to where I am today and I’m happy about that! Thanks for stopping by today!

    Hey Roz

OMG this sounds like me, were we part of the same company??? LOL

Seriously this is one of the reasons I left that area of business, it totally turned me off and I never was really comfortable doing it which is why I know I didn’t do as well as I could have. I know this company is still teaching these ways of marketing and it is so behind the times and is actually causing damage to those that are following these techniques… they are from the dinosaur era.

The more you talked in this video the more it sounded just like me, how grateful are you that we have moved away from this and onto bigger and better things with our blogs, personal branding and being in total control over how we are representing ourselves out there on the internet!

    Fabulous story
    cheers

Awww, I wonder if we were in the same company lol? But actually there are SO many companies that are still stuck in the 80′s and early 90′s when the internet wasn’t as readily available to everyone.

Opening myself up to attraction marketing and personal branding has really opened up many doors for possibilities in the future and I’m so thankful for it! SO glad that it’s the same with you that you aren’t in that environment anymore. This way is SO much better and we just have to preach it sista! :) Thanks for stopping by today!

Great blog Roz! I really enjoyed your video and tips on using your blog as your central hub. Thankfully I learned the Personal Branding method before spamming all over the social media networks. There are so many network marketers that can definitely benefit from your post. I think alot of the spammers mean well, it’s just that they don’t know another way. Thanks for teaching “the way”!

    Hey Roz,

Such an awesome video. I’m so new to this and glad to see that I’m on the right track. I did start out spamming (a little) on facebook and twitter and calling warm/cold markets. I hated both. Family and friends know immediately when you’re stepping out of your comfort zone and most of the time they’ll pick up on that and give you a kind no.

I started my website and then tore it down and converted it into a blog after I realized that the personal aspect of being able to actively communicate with people was missing. I’m working on getting that up to speed. Your video is so right on and what I’ve been feeling was the right way to go. You confirmed it thanks.

    [Reply]

    Roz Pearcy Reply:

How awesome for you Alice! I think most if not all of us start spamming because that is what we are “told to do” by our upline. But doing things this way has people coming to you asking what you do. That makes not only for happy family and friends (lol!) but also for a happier you.

With this method you give first, and that always feels better than taking first. Great move to do the blog too! I did the same thing, had a website only afterwards to realize how much better a blog was all around. Just hang around the people that you like what they are doing and you will learn so much and be able to do your own thing :)

Glad to have you on my blog today and look forward to seeing you around here!

  15. Lynn Brown Says:

Over 15 years ago I started on the internet with an online shopping mall. I was taught back then to Spam – but it wasn’t called tham back then. You know how you get emails with cc:’s and when your friends would forward thos emails you would have a whole bunch of email addresses. I was given a software that ‘harvested’ these emails. I did really well with my shopping mall but then there was a lot of talk about people getting upset with unsolicited emails. Thus Spam was on everybody’s hot list.

Today I am so happy to see the internet taking a different direction with social media. I love meeting and creating relationships with visitors, clients and potential partners. With many years of marketing experience, it was natural for me to work with social media sites. I can’t tell you the last time I ‘emailed’! I enjoy blogging, forums, and groups. I have increased my business in a much shorter time than ever before. If you respect the social media and how it can benefit you, your business and most important, your potential clients – the internet will thrive and so will online business.

Thanks Roz for putting your story out there and creating this discussion among so many of us.

You are welcome Lynn…I think the main thing is that many of us didn’t start spamming knowing we were just spamming. We were taught that we were “Sharing” information. But sometimes that can be spamming if it’s done the wrong way.

If you lead with value things will happen MUCH quicker than if you spam, and you don’t ruin relationships that way, but instead build some great ones!

    Thanks for your great comment!

    Hi Roz,

That was an excellent video! I too was a “spammer” cough, cough! Hate that word. haha! Anyway, truly inspiring video that I think others are really going to benefit from. There is something so much more empowering to be actually HELPING people while you build your business than just sitting there and posting 400 online classifieds like you mentioned.

I remember doing that and it was totally no fun at all. :-)

    Thanks for sharing!

Oh dear…I think I’m a spammer! Thanks for this video. It confirms my feelings that I know what I’m doing is not what I want to be doing (or how I want to be doing things!).

I’m a bit overwhelmed at how to start over so I’m glad I found your site. Hopefully it will help me find my new starting point.

    Roz Pearcy Reply:

    @Melissa,

No worries girl! It happens most frequently because we “do what we are told” when we are learning from our team on how to market our business.

Unfortunately many teams are still stuck in the 90′s or early 2000′s where spamming was “ok” (even though it was not ok back then, just not as many people complained lol). We need to get with the times and understand that we need to respect other people’s time and inbox’s. I’m glad this post helped you Melissa!
